What are some classic R/S fics or classic R/S art for you? Fanworks that influenced you when you first discovered the pairing? Fanworks that helped form your image of the characters? Or fanworks that you return to frequently?

I feel like I've hardly scratched the surface of fanwork in a lot of ways (I've still got so much I have to read!), but the first R/S fanfic I ever read was lovers alone wear sunlight (http://archiveofourown.org/works/231328) by musesfool, and I love it to bits. When I was first peeking around the fandom early this year, I found, like, five reclists and couldn't decide what to choose, so I picked randomly and struck gold!

I love the characterizations and the banter, not to mention the delightful AU it's set in (no one dies! Remus keeps his teaching job!); I've got a huuuuuge soft spot for these two as older adults, and this fic definitely pushed me head-over-heels. :-)

These are two of my favourite fics ♥

Long Live Living (If Living Can be This) by Excaliburned

No Expectations by [livejournal.com profile] bluepeony

I didn't keep a record of the fics I read when I first started reading fics in this fandom, and as a result I now barely remember any of them :/ what I do remember as being pretty "formative" for me, for lack of better words, is [livejournal.com profile] epithalamium's art. When I was first starting out in the R/S fandom she and I both did art for Tea and Oranges (which, to this day, remains one of my favourite fics as well ♥) for the R/S bigbang and ♥ her art is so perfect for the fic and I just. Ahhhh. Also my two absolute favourite pieces of hers? To absolutely nobody's surprise: All The Way Home (punk!R/S!) and This is not a love song (also punk!).

I get the impression that a lot of folks in fandom view The Shoebox Project as some kind of R/S fandom bible, but I don't fall into that camp. That fic doesn't hold any particular meaning to me... Which puts me in the minority, I guess?

LONG LIVE LIVING. YES.

Interesting that you say that about SBP. I love that fic (though I've never actually finished it), but it was not even close to the first or most formative part of Wolfstar land I ever experienced.

I'm not on my computer atm so I don't have my bookmarks, but when I get home I will make a new comment with my list.

long live living <3 IT MAKES MY CHEST BURST WITH HAPPINESS I CAN'T HANDLE THIS FIC AT ALL

i'm mostly curious to see how people really feel about SBP and if my impression is true or not. :)

I don't actually have the time to properly respond to this question right now, will come back later for that, but I have to put my two cents in about SBP. I wasn't a huge fan art all. I'll give it credit for concept and style but it hit on too many tropes I disagree with for me to ever fully appreciate it. I just never managed to see what do many people saw in it, so if you're in the minority I guess I'm climbing on in after you.

yes, the tropes! i didn't read SBP until after i'd already read a bunch of (at the time) recent fic and a great deal of older fest fic and whatnot. so when i read SBP it was like this aha moment. "so THAT'S where that trope comes from!! ugh" XD
it did have its moments though, i'll give it that, but on the whole i was very unimpressed and undoubtedly also biased against it because i already didn't like the tropes in it.

THIS REMINDS ME THAT THIS YEAR WON'T BE THE FIRST TIME I CHOSE YOUR PROMPT FOR THE SMALL GIFTS AHAHA

Re: SBP, I enjoyed it, and there were things about it that I probably 'adopted' into my writing, but I don't particularly think it's the perfect R/S fic or that anyone who's ever shipped R/S should have read it. (The Remus and Sirius in SBP is wildly different from the ones I have in my head, too. >.>)

THEY WERE THEY REALLY WERE. And how cringe-inducingly shy Remus was in SBP. It's like, I see nothing of that cold bitchy professor in PoA in SBP!Remus at all. >.>

He was cripplingly shy. Like. Where does that come from? Not canon. <.< he's a bit of a pushover, yeah, but he's not shy. it's probably why Thom reminds me of Remus so much. They're both pushovers but they both have this fire inside that manifests only when necessary and neither of them are really shy. and they both wear cardigans ahahhaha

Is it bad that I kinda think Remus and Thom are indeed kinda similar, too? And also sometimes I kinda think Rook and Sirius has some similarities what is wrong with me

Oh so many, but the only one that really springs to mind is 'The Red and the Black' by daphnaea. It was so beautifully written and the characterisation was so believable (even if the plot wasn't) and complex that I'd be lying if I said this fic didn't influence my picture of the boys, and their relationship with each other.
Aside from that, 'The Scar' by mysid built a very nice Remus for me to angst over and now that I've thought about it, influenced my recent piece over at the R/S Games.

I mean, I can give a loooong list of good fics I've read and would recommend, but that would be digressing from the question.

To add to the SBP discussion [livejournal.com profile] nerak_rose, I really enjoyed it as a fic. I enjoyed the writing style and got very involved with following the story. And though it will no doubt have influenced some part of how I see the boys (without recalling exactly what), I don't consider it a bible or canon either.
Also, was it you that mentioned 'stealing Harry'? I've never heard of it before...

Definitely all of [livejournal.com profile] franticbabbles's fics. I seem to remember her describing Sirius as with uneven eyeteeth or something, and that forever stayed in my mind.

I have a bunch more fics that I have bookmarked and stuff, but franticbabbles probably have a special place in my heart.

Yes to those! I think franticbabbles was the first series I ever read and they will always be special. :)

Okay, the piece that probably shaped my ideas the most (not to mention being the first piece I read of any consequence no matter how many I found after) was Momentum by Children of the Shadows. Without going into too much detail, in an extremely round about way I blame that piece for my finding my way over to lj, all the wonderful works here and all these wonderful fests.

OH BOY. FAVE OLD FICS. Okay, so I went through my FictionAlley bookmarks (which are the really old ones of mine, dear Merlin) and we have
  • Anything by Marauder (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/marauder), but ESPECIALLY, AS IN THIS MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE R/S FIC EVER who am I kidding I can't pick favorites People Sirius Loves (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/marauder/PSL01a.html)

  • Mapmakers (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/casira/mapmakers01.html) by casira (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/casira) is also great. I don't remember their other work well enough to comment on it.

  • Mieko Belle (http://fanlore.org/wiki/Mieko_Belle) has regrettably taken down all her HP fic but if you happen to find any floating around communities or anything, I really enjoyed it.

  • pru (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/pru) is also pretty cool, and I had specifically named Seven Things That Never Happened at Hogwarts on Valentine's Day... (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/pru/STTNHAHOVD01a.html) in my bookmarks

  • Taking Advice (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/rin/TA.html) and pretty much anything else out there by rin (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/rin)

I also looked through ff.net bookmarks but the only thing that popped out at me there as an old stand-by is Flower Shop (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3106569/1/Flower-Shop) by cinderella200, which is right up there with People Sirius Loves in terms of pressing my outsider-pov-narration buttons.

Then some more recent things:
  • [livejournal.com profile] adistantsun wrote Elegy of the Spheres for the rs_games 2012, which ought to be found here (DW) (http://rs-games.dreamwidth.org/109304.html) or here (AO3) (http://archiveofourown.org/works/566483), but both of the links are acting up for me at present. Boo :(

  • The same fest/year, [livejournal.com profile] so_jayded wrote Latte Art (http://rs-games.dreamwidth.org/107580.html), which is the coffeeshop AU to end all coffeeshop AUs forever and always (imho), and adistantsun actually did a phenomenal podfic of it, which you can find if you friend her on LJ.

Also people have already mentioned Long Live Living and the Stealing Harry 'verse, which are fantastic to the extreme. OH and there is also [livejournal.com profile] imochan's old R/S love post (http://imochan.livejournal.com/297961.html) which in a similar vein to this post and might have some fun things. i have never actually made it all the way through it because it is ginormous and a half.

Whew, okay, that was a lot of recs. And I get really excited about a lot of things. For instance right now I'm going to go get excited about bed. ♥
