kalanikamori and everyone else!
“All I’m saying,” Sirius says with an expression of incredulity plastered across his face-- even in the dark Remus can see it-- “is that it’s bloody shameful you have never been ice skating.” Remus opens his mouth to say something in response and Sirius holds up a hand. “And don’t give me an excuse; I live in the middle of the city and I’ve been.”
“I’m not sure which argument I should start with, Padfoot,” Remus answers. “One, it is the middle of the night and Filch already told you that if he catches you out of the dormitory after hours again, you’ve got detention for the rest of the term. Two, the full moon, as I’m sure you remember, was only two days ago; I’m tired. Third, and most importantly, we haven’t got ice skates.”
“James,” Sirius hisses at the boy in the next bed over. James rolls over sleepily. “I’m going to borrow the cloak,” he says.
“Yeah, alright,” James mutters, not opening his eyes.
“Problem number one solved,” Sirius says, grinning as he digs the invisibility cloak out from James’s trunk. “Which one was next? You’re tired? We won’t stay out long,” he promises, grabbing a scarf and looping it over Remus’s neck.
“Still doesn’t change the fact that we haven’t got any ice skates,” Remus says, even as he pulls on a coat. “Unless you’ve learned some sort of skate-conjuring charm.”
“The ice is quite slick,” Sirius answers. “We shouldn’t need skates.”
“Well then,” Remus says, “I fail to see how that’s ice skating. We’re going out in the middle of the night for ice sliding around?” Sirius nods earnestly, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world, and Remus shakes his head in disbelief but follows Sirius down the staircase and through the portrait hole, slipping under the invisibility cloak with him once they are around the corner.
The boys make their way down staircases and through hallways until they reach the secret passage onto the grounds. They’ve used the passage hidden behind a statue on the second floor many times before, and they sneak outside, where Sirius throws off the cloak. A gust of wind blows snow into their faces, and Remus shakes his head as the snowflakes get caught in his hair.
Sirius gives a barking laugh and grabs Remus’s hand, tugging him toward the lake. At the edge, he taps a foot on the ice experimentally. “Are you sure it’ll hold?” Remus asks.
Sirius nods. He takes a step onto the ice, motioning for Remus to follow. The boys walk out onto the lake, occasionally gripping each other’s arms for balance.
Then Sirius hits a particularly slick patch and tumbles onto the ground. Remus steps quickly out of the way before Sirius’s flailing arms can bring him down as well. On the ground, Sirius laughs, brushing his hair out of his eyes. He holds a hand out. “A little help, Moony?” Remus grins and grabs Sirius’s hand to pull him to his feet. The young man loses his balance again as he stands, pitching forward, and Remus grabs him by both shoulders to keep him upright.
Sirius’s face is centimeters away from Remus’s, and Remus can see the snowflake that is stuck in Sirius’s left eyelashes. He can feel Sirius’s warm breath on his face. Then Sirius leans forward a bit more and presses his lips to Remus’s cheek. Remus raises his eyebrows in surprise, but after a moment he relaxes, smiles, and turns his face slightly to meet Sirius’s lips with his own. Sirius takes a step toward Remus to pull him closer and ends up slipping on the ice again. He lands on top of Remus, who falls flat on his back on the ice.
“Well,” Remus says, looking up at the other boy. “I don’t believe that could’ve been less graceful.”
“Bollocks,” Sirius mutters, rolling off of Remus to lie on the ice by his side. “Sorry about that, mate.”
“The kissing or the falling?” Remus asks, looking at him curiously.
“The falling,” Sirius clarifies. He pauses. “Should I be sorry about the kissing?” he asks, suddenly looking worried.
“Only in that it led to the falling,” Remus says, sitting up. He gets carefully to his feet and then once again helps Sirius stand up. Sirius moves to pull Remus in for another kiss and the other boy backs away. “We just tried that, remember?” he says, laughing. “Not that it wasn’t enjoyable,” he tells Sirius reassuringly, “but I’m pretty sure my arse is already frozen, so why don’t you wait until we’re back on solid ground.”
Sirius nods. Then he grabs Remus by the waist. “Dance with me, Moony” he says.
“You can barely walk on the ice,” Remus reminds him, but he allows himself to be pulled close to Sirius, and after a moment’s hesitation, he takes one of Sirius’s hands in his own. They move slowly, turning on the spot and taking small, careful steps.
“You don’t seem too worried about the whole ‘being kissed by your best mate’ thing,” Sirius comments.
“Well... I sort of figured,” Remus answers.
“Figured what?”
“That you feel like this.”
“How so?” Sirius responds, grinning.
“You didn’t ask James to go ice skating. Or Peter. Also, you are really very obvious when you fancy someone.”
“Am I?” Sirius asks, smirking, and Remus nods.
“Very,” he confirms. “Of course,” he considers, “I do know you rather better than most people.” Sirius smiles. He moves his hand from Remus’s hip to the small of his back and presses until Remus’s body is flush against his. Remus rests his cheek against Sirius’s. “This is nice,” Remus comments.
“Very romantic,” Sirius says.
“Yes,” Remus agrees, gripping Sirius’s hand tighter. “Too bad I’m stuck out here with you instead of some nice girl.”
“You don’t mean that,” Sirius responds, chuckling.
“Not at all.”
“I told you ice skating would be fun,” Sirius says, still laughing, his mouth close to Remus’s ear.
“This isn’t ice skating,” Remus says, a hint of exasperation in his voice. “We haven’t got ice skates.”
“Alright,” Sirius says cheerfully. “Well, I told you ice.... sliding around would be fun then.” Then he slips again, pulling Remus down with him.
“Ice falling,” Remus mumbles, his face pressed into Sirius’s hair.
Remus draws back from Sirius. “I’m going back up to the castle. You don’t have to come, but I won’t cry over your frozen corpse.” Sirius grins and follows him back to shore. He trips once along the way, his left foot slipping on the ice and sliding out from under him, but Remus grabs Sirius’s shoulder and keeps him on his feet. At the edge of the lake, Sirius twists the fingers of his left hand into Remus’s wavy hair and cups his right under the young man’s jaw. Their lips are cold against each other’s, but they still kiss for several long moments. When they break apart, their breath is visible, white clouds puffing out between them.
“You would’ve cried a little,” Sirius says.
“A tear or two,” Remus admits jokingly. As they make their way back up to the castle and then to the Gryffindor tower, Sirius slips the invisibility cloak back over their heads.
Halfway through the portrait hole into the common room, Sirius grabs Remus by the arm. “Next time,” he promises, “We’ll find some real ice skates.”
“You couldn’t even stay upright without skates,” Remus says, smiling gently. Sirius leans to kiss him and ends up bumping his nose against Remus’s cheekbone. “Practice that too,” Remus tells him.
Sirius takes a few steps toward the staircase at the end of the Gryffindor common room before he looks back at Remus.
"Don't worry," he says, "I intend to practice as much as possible." He then bounds up the stairs, leaving Remus alone in the dark for a few moments before he follows. Remus is still rather tired, but he thinks that perhaps he could be persuaded to lose a bit more sleep.
After all, practice makes perfect.
