Summary:Sirius doesn’t quite know how Christmas goes outside the House of Black
Any other notes, warnings, etc.: Maybe a bit of fluff?
New Traditions
Sirius woke to an obscene amount of noise coming from the bed next to his. He tried to close his eyes even tighter, but he was beginning to wake on the inside, and his eyes slipped open of their own accord. He rolled over, the bed sheets wrapping around his legs and making him into a warm, happy mummy. He looked over at James, who was jumping on his bed, clearly trying to wake Sirius.
“Wake up, wake up, it’s Christmas!” James yelled, pouncing on Sirius’ bed. “Christmas doesn’t wait for lazy sods!”
And with that he ripped the covers off Sirius’ bed and took off down the stairs. Sirius groaned, but jumped out of bed and followed James down the stairs, tackling him at the base. They tussled for a moment before James ripped away, running into the living room.
Just as he sat down, a fire burst in the fireplace as James’ parents came down the stairs, yawning and clearly used to this behavior from their sixteen-year-old son. Sirius stood awkwardly for a moment, before sitting by the fire. James began to sort the packages, placing a small pile in front of each of his parents and several packages in front of Sirius. He himself sat beside a large pile of odd sized packages.
Sirius glanced down at his pile, looking at all the tags on the brightly wrapped parcels before him. Two from James, one from Remus, one from Peter, three from James’ parents, and a small one with no name. He smiled, a flush to his cheeks. Mrs. Potter smiled at him.
“We weren’t sure what to give you, Sirius, since you never gave us any kind of hints, but we hope we found things in your taste,” she said.
Sirius smiled, and began to carefully unwrap his presents. From James he received a large package of Fillibuster’s fireworks and a large assortment of sweets from Honeydukes. From the Potters, a new blue woolen sweater and scarf to match, as well as a new set of Chaser gloves. Peter had given him a bag of Ice Mice, poorly wrapped and bound so tightly with blue string it had taken him nearly three minutes to unwrap. Remus had given him a book of course, an incredibly beautiful copy of the Lord of the Rings (Remus had always let him read his muggle books after he was done with them, and The Lord of the Rings had been his favorite), as well as another scarf, black and white plaid and incredibly soft. He slipped the last, tiny package in his pocket for later.
James had received things from all of his relatives, as well as his own set of Chaser’s gloves and a broom polishing kit (which Sirius teased him mercilessly about). Remus had given him a scarf as well, and Peter’s Ice Mice were already chattering in his mouth. Mr. Potter came around to each of them, handing them a cup of hot cocoa and a gingerbread man. Sirius couldn’t keep the smile off his face, and crept closer to the fire so that his outside would feel just as warm and at home as his insides. He lay there until he smelled bacon cooking and saw James’ hand waving in front of his face.
“Come on, Padfoot, breakfast is served, then Moony’s coming!” he said, and just like that, he was gone again, bounding out of the room. Sirius smiled, and cast one more long look at the fire before rolling over and jumping to his feet.
Breakfast was a casual mix of salty and sweet, pancakes and bacon and eggs and kippers till no one could move. Sirius inwardly reveled in the fact that he was still in his pajamas and no one had yelled at him. He picked up a pancake and ate it with his hands… nope, no one yelled at him. What a great start to a holiday.
After breakfast they dressed, and Sirius and James grabbed their brooms and raced out the door. Together they raced the chill and won, looping each other and taking turns catching James’ snitch. During one amazing catch, Sirius ended up in a tree, demanding that James help him as the boy collapsed into giggles.
“James, for god’s sake, get him down!”
James whirled around. “Moony! Hey look, Padfoot, Moony’s here!”
Sirius growled and swore, threats escaping as he thrashed. Suddenly, there was a crash as he fell through the canopy straight onto James.
Now it was Remus’ turn to laugh, pulling Sirius off James only to be pulled into the fray. Twenty minutes and a lot of shirt stuffing later, three very soaked boys collapsed on the couch in front of the fire, where they were quickly supplied with biscuits and hot cocoa. They were all flushed from the cold, cheeks and eyes bright as they drank. Remus let his hand fall to Sirius’ thigh, nudging the small box.
“What is this? A present from your secret lover?” he said playfully, and Sirius pulled the box out thoughtfully.
“I forgot. I didn’t want to open it in front of James’ parents.” The box was wrapped in black, and fit into the palm of his hand. He slipped his finger under one side of the paper and opened it, lifting the lid off the box and tipping it into his hand. Out fell a ring, black glass set carefully with a tiny, delicate ruby. He handed it to Remus, then took a folded note out of the box. In small, perfect cursive was written,
I believe you can be both…
I do miss you today.
Sirius smiled and folded it up before the others asked to read it. He was glad he had decided to send his brother something, even if their parents could never know they were still communicating. Remus had passed the ring to James, who inspected it carefully.
“I like it. He’s got good taste.” James said. Sirius smiled, slipping the ring on his middle finger.
They’d changed into more comfortable clothes and fallen asleep there, just as James remembered he’d done as a child. This pile of sixteen-year-olds were found by Remus’ parents as they carefully stepped over them after appearing in the Floo, having been invited for dinner.
The teens were shaken awake by the time dinner was served, and all had a lovely time. The boys were the subject of much boasting on the parts of the parents, who had lavish praise on them about their grades and OWLS. Sirius was not left out, and his cheeks were tinged pink the entire meal, as he was not used to receiving such words of affection. They sat around the wireless after, leaving the dishes for later, two little families made into one. James lamented the absence of Peter, who was on holiday in Sweden, and Remus and Sirius agreed with solemn nods.
Eventually, the Lupins bid their son and their hosts goodnight, kissing Remus on the head and pulling Sirius and James into a tight hug, Soon after, the Potters retired as well, kissing all three boys goodnight.
“So, is this what Christmas cheer feels like?” Sirius chuckled around a new glass of cocoa. “Because… this is completely different from how this holiday goes in my old dwelling.”
“Well, that’s because you were doing it wrong, Padfoot,” James said matter-of-factly. “This is what Christmas is all about, presents, good food, hot cocoa….”
“Not to mention friends and family, you dolt.” Remus said, leaning his head against Sirius’ chest. Sirius smiled down and him, pressing a kiss into his hair.
“Are you two going to get all snuggly?” James said with mock distain. “Because if you are I may have to remove myself from the premises.”
Sirius hit him on the back of the head. “Leave. We’re going to have hot sex on your living room floor, so you’ll never be able to enter this room with an innocent mind again.”
Remus did his best to laugh evilly, but it just came out as his ordinary chuckle. “Yes, be gone, and never bother us again.”
“Fuck you, this is my house, and I’m staying. I want to spend the rest of Christmas with my bloody friends, and that’s what I’m going to do!” He paused, looking at the two of them. “I’m going to turn the other way though… tell me when you’re done snogging so I know when to obliviate myself.” He rolled over, facing the fire.
“Deal,” Sirius said, kissing his Moony in earnest. “Happy Christmas, Moonpie.”
Remus growled. “I should hit you.”
“You should, but you won’t.”
“Which is why I have to,” said James
“Shut it, Prongs.”
Sirius pulled Remus so close that he could feel his eyelashes whisper against his own cheeks. With everything going on, it was rare they could spend a moment and not worry about the consequences. For now, all he had to worry about was James beating him into the floor and kicking him from the house. That, he felt, was a risk he could take, seeing as James had not yet kicked them out of the dorm room. He kissed Remus’ nose, his cheeks, laughing as he opened his eyes and saw the blurred vision of his lovers eyes, amber in the firelight.
“You’re amazing.” Sirius whispered, and Remus smiled and blushed. Sirius felt the devotion flow through his veins, and a hope in him that no one could snatch away that maybe they would figure this world out.

Date: 2008-12-11 03:25 pm (UTC)I must say, I particularly love this line: He rolled over, the bed sheets wrapping around his legs and making him into a warm, happy mummy. Because that's exactly how I feel when I wake up in a warm, toasty bed. X)

Date: 2008-12-11 03:45 pm (UTC)I think my favourite part was the ring from Regulus though. I'm glad that even though Sirius has run away, they are still trying to remain close.
Absolutely lovely.
