melandry for the read through.
Sirius, transformed into Padfoot, sat curled up tightly on the ground, or as tightly as a 13 stone dog could get he supposed. It had been snowing since at least four that morning but the canopy of trees above him was thick, allowing only the occasional flake to drop on his coat. He'd been in the same state of not quite wakefulness for the past hour and was enjoying the hushed quality of the air that came with the falling snow.
It was the sound of flapping wings that finally caused him to wake from this lull and with barely a nod he felt himself melt back into his own body. The movement caused the owl to spot him and it slowly spiralled downwards, coming to land on his outstretched hand.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the remnants of a broken cracker or two. 'S'all I got,' he said apologetically and then removed the bit of parchment tied to her leg. She nipped lightly at his hand and he scratched her head before she shook out her wings and took off again.
The parchment only contained two words written in careful block print - Turn around - and he spun immediately whilst grasping for his wand. Instead of any of the number of people he feared might appear, he turned to find Remus standing at the entrance to the cave he'd been using, rubbing his ungloved hands together and looking somewhere between amused and rueful.
'Moony? What are you - When did you - You aren't -'
'Daft dog,' he said, ignoring Sirius' pile of half finished questions.
'What?'
'You're the only one I know who is first stubborn enough to choose to spend months on end in a cave and then opts to sit amongst the mounds of snow surrounding it rather than within the shelter it provides.'
'A waterproof coat has its advantages,' he muttered. 'That doesn't answer any of my questions, you do realise that, yes?'
Remus merely rolled his eyes and casting a Lumos, made his way into the cave. Sirius followed and watched as he quickly surveyed its near-bare interior.
'S'not quite Mr Tumnus' -'
'No, it's not. But then hopefully this isn't an eternal winter either,' Remus replied as he conjured up a pair of large cushions and slowly lowered himself on to one. Once settled he rustled through his bag and produced a couple of small lanterns which he set to lighting.
'Reached dead ends from both of my sources. Didn't seem much worth it to wait around another two weeks hoping for a passing reference to Peter,' he continued before Sirius could start another round of questioning. 'Reckoned I might be more useful ensuring you didn't freeze yourself to death up here. Honestly, of all the places you could have wintered, you chose Scotland?'
Sirius was about to launch yet again into his well-practised reasons for needing to look after Harry when he caught the smirk forming at the edge of Remus' lips.
'You're a right bastard, you know that?' he said and moved to sit on the second cushion. 'Did you come here just to wind me up or does this visit have a purpose?'
'Bit of both, really,' Remus replied, his smirk morphing into a full-on grin. 'I know it is a day early and all but I brought you some things.'
Sirius watched as Remus shuffled through his bag once again and removed a small, brightly wrapped box and two plates piled with food.
'Moony -' he started but was cut of with a wave of Remus' arm.
'Don't.'
'But, how'd -' he pressed, pausing briefly to wonder where his capacity to form full sentences had gone to.
'Courtesy of Dumbledore and the house elves,' he said, motioning to the plates. 'Dilby still has a soft spot for you it seems. As for that,' he continued, tilting his head in the direction of the box, 'that's my own doing.'
Sirius stared at him, not quite sure what to say and his stomach seemed to be at war with his fingers, the latter of which were eager to tear at the wrapping.
'The food will keep,' Remus said, laughing, and handed the box to Sirius.
Sirius gave him a small smile before settling in to remove the ribbon and wrapping. Slowly lifting the box's lid, he found it contained a set of his favourite inks from when he was at Hogwarts, three quills and a package of parchment.
'Moony,' he whispered.
'Thought you might find use for those,' Remus said. 'You always were a ponce about those sorts of things.'
Sirius stopped running his fingers along the parchment grain long enough to shoot him a glare. 'Says the boy who had a notebook for every occasion. Bet you still have a pile of them littering your desk.'
Remus' only response was to kick him in the shin. Ignoring him, Sirius rubbed his leg and returned to examine the quill nibs.
A few minutes later Remus nudged his elbow and handed him one of the plates. 'Happy Christmas, Padfoot.'
Sirius smiled and putting down the box and accepting the plate, he leant in and brushed his lips across Remus' forehead. 'Happy Christmas, Remus.'
