Title: Heart Cup

Summary: The hot chocolate is hot and Sirius likes it.
Notes: It's a bit strange, but hopefuly bearable. Thank you to my friend Helena for her beta job.

The steam from the hot chocolate rises in the air and shifts and twirls in a pretty pattern, highlighted by the fluorescent lights of the café. Sirius sips his, enjoying the slight burn on his tongue, and glares at the empty seat in front of him. The space where Remus should be, but isn’t.

He contemplates charming the steam into a shape while he waits for Remus. But he realises that the waitress who has been staring at him for the past twenty minutes will see. So he contains himself and is content for a while to watch the swirly patterns climbing to the ceiling.

Remus comes into the café, bringing with him the biting wind and excited chatters of shoppers from outside. He searches around, eyes moving swiftly over every nicotine stained wall, crumb-covered table and cold customers, before finally, finally seeing Sirius in the corner with his two hot chocolates.

Remus smiles warmly. He begins unwinding his scarf from around his neck and keeps pulling and pulling until eventually, Sirius can see the pale and lightly scarred neck. Remus walks his walk to the table and sits down wordlessly. Sirius wonders why he’s refused to say anything yet, but wallows in the gorgeous feeling of filled absence.

They sit, Sirius burning his tongue and Remus warming his hands on the radiator. They still don’t talk, although there’s too much to say. There always is too much to say between them.

Sirius places his ungloved hand on the table, showing off his prominent burn from a misguided attempt at baking. There are two curving lines over the jutting bone of his wrist. He’s not sure why he wants Remus to see it, but coughs slightly so that Remus’s attention is drawn to him and his hands on the table.

‘Oh Padfoot.’ Remus sounds weary, but amused. He must know that it isn’t serious, that it’s just a mark rather than a problem. Sirius would never show it if it meant something. It’s a game he plays for sympathy. Like the many games he plays with Remus.

Remus shifts in his chair, making sure that none of the builders or other patrons are looking. The waitress has stopped staring at Sirius now, and is chatting with a friend. They have their elbows on the counter by the till and seem to be talking about what to buy newly-acquired boyfriends for presents.

Apparently satisfied with their lack of attention, Remus looks Sirius in the eyes and puts his hands on the table too. The still-gloved hands slide towards Sirius’ hands, and he picks the wounded hand up and places it on top of his, palms touching. Never breaking eye contact, Remus lifts the hand to his mouth and kiss the round bone where the burn is. Then, he puts the hand down, picks up his hot chocolate and tastes to see if it is still hot.

It is.

Sirius stares as Remus makes a big fuss of his burnt and stinging tongue. He can’t kiss it better, so instead, he makes sure no-one is looking before charming the steam into a heart. Remus gives him a warm smile and Sirius thinks that it’s better than hot chocolate.

Oh, my god! This was so sweet! Your prose is just gorgeous, there's so much detail and just a sort of compelling-ness to it. (Compelling-ness is not actually a word, is it?) This just filled me with squee. :D
