I chose her third Wish, "Summer Evening" by Edward Hopper (best known for his corner diner painting, "Nighthawks"). I was intrigued at painting again. I'm done A LOT of drawing :D So, I expanded the view of the original painting:

Notes (cont.): It's been quite awhile since I painted with acrylics. I painted a few protraits in watercolor (like this of Sirius), but I'm good at acrylics, just rusty. I wish I had a HUGE-ASS canvas and oil paints like Hopper did. Instead, this is painted on a 9x12 piece of paper. It's still good though!


Thanks to the mods, the gift maybe small, but you hold a big place in my heart.

Oh my goodness, this is stunning!!! The lighting makes them glow, and I adore Sirius' jacket. It has so much texture. And the hand on Remus' back. It's so casually intimate. They look so in love, and sweet together. This is just wonderful!

This is so great! I love how you captured the intense light and shadow. The moment they're sharing seems both private and exposed. Which feels big. Like, it means something for a same sex couple to be able to be physically intimate (even G-rated!) outside, where anyone *could* see them. This picture makes me think about how fraught that still is--something straight people can take for granted and same-sex or gendervariant couples never can. And that you chose Hopper as a reference! Hopper one of the quintessential 20th century American painters. I'm thinking of how some of his most famous paintings of people show them curiously isolated, even when they aren't alone, like that one in the diner. And how being a queer person in a straight world can feel like that. But in your rendition, they aren't isolated--your couple is so clearly enjoying a moment of intimacy and comfort and love, and maybe even dancing together. AND OMG I JUST REALIZED THEY ARE LITERALLY STANDING JUST OUTSIDE OF HOPPER'S FRAME!!!! LIKE MAYBE THEY WERE THERE ALL ALONG BUT HOPPER COULDN'T PAINT THEM!!! AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!

The more I think about it, the more I feel like this painting is really fucking amazing. I would love to see you do a whole series of these--choosing iconic paintings of straight couples and then painting the other side of the room/porch/garden and show us the queer (or otherwise marginalized) couple there. !!!!!

Okay, I will stop now, but just....wow.

Oh, Jamie, that was exceedingly gorgeous! You captured all the best things about Hopper (at least in my opinion):

- the postures of the figures and how a single slouch or cheek touch can tell an entire story

- the vintage feel of the whole thing

- and, of course, the light. I love Hoppers work because of his use of light and shadow, how it really captures the feeling of urban/suburban night time

I don't know why I never responded, but this meant a lot to me. To have someone notice something I did "right" with the painting without me overtly realizing why I had done it correctly. I inherently knew that the stark contrast of the shadows was a big deal, but I was loyal to it because I knew it had to be and also, shading [lighting] is always what draws me to art. That's why I'm not as in love with sculpture as I am with 2D art. But I didn't specifically think to myself that Hopper's "thing" was to do _________." So, thank you. :)
