Hi, folks! If you're just joining us, we're on DAY SIX of seven days of discussion before Small Gifts begins posting. Start off by introducing yourself (and meeting fellow participants and watchers) over here!

Day 6: Remus vs. Sirius

Do you identify with Remus (or some of his personality characteristics) or Sirius (or some of his personality characteristics?--or both or neither? Has that affected how you prefer to read/write/draw/see the pairing? Does it affect you preference for a POV character? Has your identification with one or the other changed over time?

P.S. Sorry this post is so late today, folks!

In this, as in all things, I am a confirmed switch!

I was originally more drawn to Remus, but over time I have come to know and love Sirius just as much, and have actually written more fic from his POV. A friend and I were talking about how it is sometimes easier to write from Sirius's POV for a plot-driven fic because he seems to have more external action going on around him (often chaos of his own making) whereas Remus's character lends itself to more interiority. Of course that's not true all the time, but I think there's something to it.

Several times I have written Wolfstar-centric fics that were in other characters' POV, which was an interesting and different way to explore R/S. Last year my entry for this fest was told from Charlie's POV, which highlighted different things than I usually see. There was waaay less angst, for one thing. (But just as much porn!)

That internal/external thing is really interesting, because I've written more from Remus' POV partly because it's sometimes the easiest way to get a really clear handle on what's going on with him. You don't really need to get inside Sirius' head to know what he's feeling so much!

oh gosh. honestly I identify so much with remus that writing from his pov feels almost redundant, lmao, so it's funny you say that! i default into sirius pov most frequently. idk after writing a sirius centric fic for games I sort of experimented this month writing something that is largely remus pov and there's just a lot of us looking at each other in exasperation like 'u make the worst fucking decisions'. it's simultaneously cathartic and deeply uncomfortable to write someone you id w so much

i definitely identify more with remus, in terms of personality, i guess. the outcast story hits closer to home than the black sheep story (pun intended!) and i've always loved remus' dialogue, that spark in his characterisation that's particularly present in PoA.

in reading fic, i have no preference. as for my own fic, writing remus POV is quite safe for me, whereas sirius POV is more of a challenge. i think i tend to write more remus POV, but i let myself go more when i write sirius POV. interesting!

Hmm I don't think I particularly identify with either character! But I think that is why I enjoy reading and writing them both. It's probably some sort of escapism...

Sirius has always been my favourite character, although I've tended to write more from Remus' POV in the past. I don't have much in common with either of them, but I've been more anxious about writing from Sirius' POV because he's so much cleverer than me. It's easy to show intelligence from a third-party POV because you can just observe them doing some impressive magic or something, it's harder to convey that mental process.

Still, despite not being much like either in canon, I do read a lot of fiction, overuse sarcasm, and might fight you for chocolate, so my fanon Remus game is A+. I even have a tattoo of Canis Major. ;D

You have a tattoo of Canis major? Is that a fandom inspired tat? Can we see a pic???

I do and it is. It's on my ankle, though, so I keep falling over when I try to take a pic. It's got a watercolour style background so there's a lot of ink and it hurt like a bastard. Still, worth it.

I adore both characters but Remus will always be the one I gravitate towards. He is my absolute favourite HP character and there are a host of reasons why but it is too early in the am for me to formulate proper thoughts haha. Maybe I will expand later.

So... short answer? Both. My favorite character to read is definitely Remus, but I identify far more with Sirius (in a lot of ways). I suppose that sort of explains why my favorite is Remus, honestly.
