[identity profile] smallgiftsmods.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] small_gifts
Hi, folks! If you're just joining us, we're on DAY FOUR of six days of discussion before Small Gifts begins posting. Start off by introducing yourself (and meeting fellow participants and watchers) over here!

Today's question: Remus or Sirius? No, no, you don't need to pick one or the other, but do you identify more with one? Do you tend to enjoy fic written from one POV? Did you find yourself attracted to one character before the other? Do you feel more protective of one? Do you tend to favor one pining...or one making the first move?

I identify with both of them, for different reasons.  The reasons are relatively personal (http://clovenbuttercup.livejournal.com/11205.html), so I've linked to meta I've written on it rather than going into it here - I can project on things, sometimes, and that's not what I want to do.

Moony is my favourite character in the fandom, so I mostly prefer stuff that's sympathetic to him if not in his POV; I also feel protective of him, but that may be me projecting.  I used to be less fond of Sirius than I am now, but these days would happily read from either POV.

As far as pining goes most of the fic I've read where this is a thing tends to be from Sirius' POV, although not exclusively, and I think I prefer them that way. I don't have a preference on who makes the first move :)

I love Sirius.

Sirius's POV.

Sirius w/ everything.

Remus, Remus, Remus. :) I identify with him much more than with Sirius, who is brash, impulsive and charismatic where I am quiet and perhaps not as brave as I should be. I'm attracted to Remus's calm composure, his kindness and how good a teacher he is, and I enjoy seeing him through Sirius's eyes/POV. I'm instinctively more protective of Remus just because I love him as a character so much, though god knows Sirius has been through enough crap of his own.

No preference for who's pining or who makes the first move. :)

For identifying, I reflexively thought, no one! I usually don't think of fictional characters as someone to identify with. However! As it happens, Sirius is the one exception. This is because we've both had Azkaban- type experiences. He lost a great number of years there. I lost four years while I was unable to move from a severe illness. I would note that I was having birthdays without feeling as though time was actually passing. I therefore think of myself as younger than I am. Also, Sirius had to deal with Dementors. I had to deal with doctors. Same thing! ;) I must object when JKR says, "Sirius never grew up," thanks to his experience. It's not really like that. Just because you can't experience anything in the outside world doesn't mean that you're not experiencing things on the inside.

Sirius is so completely the epitome of my favorite type of character that it's almost embarrassing. Rebellious, pretty, and most importantly born into a situation where he had every reason to turn out as an utterly despicable human being, but instead learned to reject his bigoted upbringing and pledge his life to a moral cause.

For some weird reason, though, I prefer fic written about him to fic written from his perspective. I suppose I like to read what others think of him?

I love Remus dearly as well, of course.

I'm fairly protective of them both, because their lives were unfair buckets of garbage, so. Yeah.

When I first got into fandom I identified more with Sirius, because of the way he chooses friends over family, and his combination of bravado and mistakes. As I've got older I have shifted to identifying more with Remus's caution and quieter kind of courage.

Wow... I've been away from the internet and I've missed all of this (as well as both sign ups and claiming this year, sadly, so I'm here for all the reading and commenting...)

Okay, this is actually a strange question for me. I definitely identify with Sirius the most. There are a lot of personal reasons for that that I won't spill all over the comments section, but it's really easy for me to get into his head. On the flip side, I tend to actually like Remus more, which, I suppose, in a strange way makes sense. So I have a tendency (although, not exclusively) to write from Sirius POV in a rather gushing way about Remus. And I'm a fan of all the pining, so, everyone pining all the time.

I identify with Remus. He is acutely aware that he is different, and has learnt that this is not okay. He spends a lot of energy trying to fit in, to hide the fact that he is different, but ultimately he can never keep it up for too long before people start to notice. Because I identify with Remus, I don't often write him. I have to be in the right frame of mind. Writing fiction is escapism, but writing Remus means drawing on the things I'm trying to take a break from.

I love Sirius. I love his charisma, his enthusiasm, his loyalty, but mostly I love his flaws. I love that he is flawed. He's an absolute tosspot sometimes, which is why he's so much fun to write. He's not afraid to speak the truth, or run in all guns blazing with only half the facts, which can make him a great plot device.

I believe that Remus and Sirius didn't get together before Azkaban, but there was certainly a lot of UST there. If they were properly together, I don't think Sirius would have suspected him of being the spy. Remus trying to deny his feelings, 'for Sirius's sake', could have made him seem shifty, like a rift had formed between them and Remus was drifting away. I think Sirius made the first move, because Remus doesn't think he deserves love and happiness and also wouldn't want to be a burden to anyone he really cared for.
