Summary: Last day of vacation. Sirius is not quite ready to say goodbye.
Notes: M, just a little something to say thank you for pinch hitting and being part of our extended smallgifts family. Happy new year!

Sirius stood at the water's edge, eyes closed, focusing on the feel of the remnants of heat from the setting sun and the waves' lapping around his ankles. He wondered how long it would take before the water pushed enough sand over his feet to bury them entirely. As a wave receded, he wriggled his toes and took a breath in.

He heard Remus come up behind him and leant back as he felt his arm circle around his waist. Sirius began to run his fingers along Remus' wrist.

After a few more waves rolled in, Remus whispered, 'I have another assignment.'

Sirius stopped his idle tracing and shut his eyes tighter.

'Sighişoara.'

Despite himself, Sirius asked, 'Romania? Why?'

He felt Remus shuffle behind him.

'Never mind. When do you leave?'

'Portkey's set for tonight. 2 am.'

Sirius went back to wriggling his toes. After a minute or so he felt Remus' nose run along his ear. Sirius tilted his head into the gesture.

'Coming inside soon?' Remus asked. 'James and Pete are making supper. I could use some help making sure the kitchen is still standing when they're done.'

Sirius smiled to himself. 'Be in soon. Not quite ready to say goodbye to the water.'

Remus kissed the back of his head as he unwound his arms.

Sirius waited until he was sure Remus was most of the way back to the cottage before he opened his eyes. He then sank down into the sand, let the water lap around him, and watched the sun finish setting.

What a lovely, bittersweet scene! This is so evocative and has so much packed into its 250 words. Beautiful.

In this small scene you conveyed so much. The atmosphere was lovely but so we're the emotions upon Remus' news. Kudos.

Oh, what a beautiful and unexpected surprise! Thank you!

This was gorgeously written, so lush and sensual (in all the meanings of sensual, too). So small and so beautiful - bijou! And, as it is yet to rise about the single digits here, reading about someplace warm was a real treat!

Wow, you managed to impart so much emotion in so few words. This was a lovely, aching moment, so poignant between assignments before they have to part again. Beautiful read.
