Summary: Recovering after the transformation Sirius reads to Remus

Remus lay the bed down on the covers of his hospital bed, his eyes closing against his will. Madam Pomfrey had healed all of his wounds but there were some things she couldn’t help. He knew he wouldn’t sleep, he had slept for nearly 14 hours after the previous night’s full moon. But weariness pulled his bones and eyelids down like a gravitational force towards the mattress. He lay quietly, his fingers brushing the pages of the open book, his mind wandered away from the sterile infirmary.

Sirius’ entrance was unofficial and invisible, Remus could hear his hushed footsteps, unnecessary as Madam Pomfrey had retired to her private rooms hours ago. Remus was the model patient and had assured her he was fine to be left on his own for the evening, she had reservations but left as he asked. Sirius, obviously deciding the coast was clear let the Invisibility cloak slide down, he wrapped it quickly in a bundle and placed it gently on the nightstand, it had earned the respect of all the Marauders and was treated almost reverently.

Remus tried desperately to open his eyes but the dragging exhaustion limited his reaction to a small smile.

“You look like shit mate!” the whispered tones didn’t mask the shock Sirius felt at Remus’ appearance.

“Thanks,” Remus just about managed to open his eyes and made an effort to calm the fear in Sirius’ eyes.

“I’m fine really, a tiring night that’s all, bit of rest and Chocolate and Madam Pomfrey says I can go back to the dorms tomorrow.”

Sirius sat on Remus’ bed his thigh warming through the sheets to Remus who shivered as he realised he was cold. The heat was taken away as Sirius fetched a blanket from one of the other beds and placed it over Remus. He noticed then Remus’ hand resting on the book, he eased it out gently and placed it on the cabinet beside the bed and turned back to tuck the blanket in under the limp arm of his friend.

“Hmmmm, that must be a first, Remus Lupin to tired to read.”

Remus shrugged too tired to argue the point, Sirius was right anyway. As if to prove this point his eyes closed again against his will, probably a good thing for him as he missed Sirius’ alarmed look. The sheets rustled and a cold breeze snuck under before Sirius had nestled up to Remus and started to share his warmth and company. Sirius insinuated himself around the exhaustion heavy limbs of Remus until Remus’ head was resting on his chest and Sirius’ arm was wound around almost holding Remus’ torso against himself. Sirius seemed determined to share the heat radiating off his body.

Remus could hear the soft beating of Sirius’ heart, the rhythm giving a meaning and length to each moment, dissecting time and showing that it passed. Sirius’ free hand fetched the book off the cabinet and he drove the silence away from Remus as he read the words aloud. Remus felt himself drifting, held aloft on the rise and fall of pitch, Sirius’ soft breath warm on Remus’ cheek. Remus couldn’t understand the words but he took in the meaning of Sirius reading them to him and let himself drift.
