"How did you find me?"

Sirius smiles at the question, leaning against the frame of the door. Well, it's meant to be a door, but Sirius guesses Remus' father isn't a carpenter by trade. The tree fort they're in is small, crooked, and appears to be held together by a combination of several spells and even more prayers.

"You left a trail of footprints in the snow, Moony," he says. Remus curses low under his breath, and Sirius sees his cheeks tint pink. "Can I come in?"

Remus shrugs, and Sirius takes that as invitation enough. He ducks through the door and sits beside Remus on the threadbare square of carpet. Looking around, it's easy to see that the tree fort was built to fit a seven-year-old, not two lanky fifteen-year-old blokes.

Sirius rubs his hands together; it's too bloody cold to be mucking about in a tree. "Can't we do this inside? One or both of us is in danger of freezing off something vital."

Remus answers his question by rubbing across the bridge of his nose. Sirius quirks an eyebrow and sighs. He's going to have to suffer through the cold. This is what Remus does; he runs, he avoids. Unfortunately, thinks Sirius, he doesn’t have a tropical island in his back garden.

"Right, frostbite and hypothermia is it," Sirius says, and that at least elicits a small grin from Remus. It's a start. "So was it the kiss?" Sirius knows it was the kiss.

Remus turns his head sharply, frowns at him. "No, it's just that my mum forgot to put marshmallows in my cocoa. Of course it was the fucking kiss." Sarcastic bastard.

Sirius scratches his head, glancing at Remus from the corners of his eyes. It's not as if he blames Remus; he'd probably be unnerved if one of his best mates suddenly decided to kiss him too. But what was Sirius meant to do? They had been huddled together on Remus' too-small bed, the same bed he slept in as a child, looking at a magazine full of naked women. The glossy images on the pages weren't nearly as interesting to Sirius as the pair of lips Remus constantly kept licking; or the body that was pressed along his own, shoulders touching, knee pressed into thigh, heads so close on the pillow.

So he'd kissed him. He took the magazine from Remus' hands, leant over him, and kissed him. Remus' eyes had gone wider than the moon, and then he'd just disappeared. It took Sirius a full ten minutes, laying in Remus' bed and cursing at himself over and over, before he had gone out to look for him.

And now they sat, awkwardly, in the tree fort. "Moony, c'mon, it was just a kiss," Sirius says. Remus narrows his eyes at him, and Sirius flashes a sheepish grin. "All right, yeah. Maybe it wasn't. Look, what do you want from me?"

"I want you to stop acting like a twat," Remus says, pushing hard at Sirius' shoulder. Sirius only laughs. "That. That right there. Twat."

Sirius sighs, raking a hand through his hair. Remus wasn't going to make this easy, of course not. (And, truthfully, Sirius knows it's anything but easy and entirely his fault; it's just much more convenient to push the blame elsewhere.)

"You kissed me, Sirius," Remus says before Sirius can speak again.

"I know."

"Why?"

"I dunno."

Remus sighs. "Bullshit."

"Yeah, fine," Sirius laughs. "That is bullshit. I know why I kissed you. I kissed you because I wanted to."

"Why?" Remus asks again, blinking.

Sirius doesn't have a quick, witty reply. It's partially because he thinks Remus asked a stupid question, but it's mostly because he isn't sure he knows the answer. Why had he kissed Remus? Because he was there? Because he was growing bored of the cartoonishly large breasts they'd been ogling? Because he'd been wondering what his lips would feel like against his own for months? It's that last one, he knows, but Sirius just shrugs.

"I said I wanted to. Isn't that reason enough?"

Remus' voice is unexpectedly loud, and Sirius jumps. "No, Sirius, it's not fucking reason enough! I know you may not get this, but everyone else is not here for your bloody entertainment! Last week, before school let out, I saw you kissing Miriam Goldwater. And now you're snogging me? What the fuck..."

"That was just a dare, Moony!" Sirius says, waving a had dismissively. "James dared me, so I did it. It meant nothing!"

"So was this a dare too?"

Sirius frowns, hearing something different in Remus' voice. He looks over at him, but Remus has his face turned away, his eyes fixed on the fraying edge of carpet that his fingers are pulling at. "No, it wasn't a dare. It wasn't a prank, a hoax, or a clever trick."

Remus is still looking down, his fingers having pulled a long thread from the carpet. "What was it then?"

"It was me kissing you because I've wanted to kiss you ever since your birthday."

Silence falls and Sirius begins to wonder if he'd hurt himself too much trying to Apparate. No, he doesn't have the faintest idea how it's done, but anything has got to be better than this. Sirius gets itchy when things go unsaid for too long, and the past eight months of not telling Remus that he'd like to snog his breath away, please and thank you, simply refuse to let another eight seconds go by.

"Say something, Moony," he breathes, the quiet stretching out far too long to be anything but awkward.

Remus finally lifts his eyes and gazes over at Sirius, his cheeks gone all pink. "My birthday?"

Sirius rolls his eyes, though he's grinning with relief that Remus didn't run off again. "Because you bit into your cupcake I smuggled from the kitchens and got icing all over your lips, remember?" Remus nods. "And I just remember thinking that I wanted to kiss your lips until that stupid icing was gone. I sat up all night, thinking about your fucking icing-covered lips, Remus, and spent the next eight months wondering who was kissing them. And I grew bloody tired of that, let me tell you."

"So... you kissed me."

"So I kissed you."

The silence comes back. It doesn't last long.

"All of that 'a gentleman does not kiss and tell' rubbish?" Remus asks, and Sirius sees the faintest hint of a smile tugging up the corner of his mouth.

"You lot were the ones thick enough to fall for that," he replies, blushing a bit as he laughs. "Since when have I ever been anything remotely resembling a gentleman?"

Remus laughs, and Sirius breathes out a relieved sigh. "Other than Miriam and me exactly how many people have you kissed?"

Sirius bristles, instinctively protective of his reputation as a teenaged lothario. It's a guy thing, really. "Plenty of people! I... well. Okay. I kissed Marlene McKinnon once, and then she kicked me square in the bollocks."

"... the failed Cushioning Charm on your broom last term?"

"Yeah, that was her."

Remus laughs again, this time leaning into Sirius and doubling over. When he stops, he stays just as close, lifting his head to peer at Sirius' face. "How did you know about me?" he asks, worrying at his bottom lip with his teeth.

Sirius shrugs. "I didn't, not really. I was just hoping that you'd not punch me in the face if you weren't." He pauses, nudging Remus with his shoulder and grinning. "Well, that and the fact that I've never met a straight bloke who knew quite so many lyrics to Celestina Warbeck's songs."

"Shut the fuck up," Remus says, a blush spreading across the bridge of his nose. "My mum likes her songs, is all."

"Hey, Moony?"

Remus looks up, a bit confused at the sudden switch in Sirius' tone. "What, Padfoot?"

Sirius leans in and kisses him again, bringing a hand up to curl in the hair at the nape of Remus' neck. He kisses him slow, which goes against everything Sirius stands for, but he can't bring himself to rush this. He explores Remus' mouth with his own, pushing his tongue just past his parted lips with a soft sigh.

Remus is the first to pull back moments later, and he's breathless and grinning. "That's twice in one day that you've defiled cherished childhood sanctuaries, Sirius. I'm almost afraid to ask what's next..."

"You. But we'll work our way up to that." Sirius knows that Remus knows it's the false bravado of a virgin speaking, but it makes Remus blush anyway. Sirius would be the one blushing if he found out that Remus has fifteen kisses under his belt to Sirius' two (well, three now).

Remus stands and Sirius follows suit, laughing at the way they have to hunch to make their way out of the tree fort. Once they climb down the rope ladder, they both stand with their hands shoved into pockets. Remus kicks awkwardly at the freshly fallen snow; Sirius watches as the tiny snowflakes catch on Remus' eyelashes.

"Does this mean—" Remus begins.

"That we're dating?" Sirius finishes.

"Yeah."

"Do you want it to mean that?"

Remus pauses. Sirius bites at his lower lip, trying (unsuccessfully) to affect an air of nonchalance, as if he can't be bothered to care either way. Remus leans in just then, and he kisses softly at Sirius' lips.

"Yeah," he says, the word a breathy puff of white fog in the frozen night air.

Sirius shrugs, though his insides are somersaulting. "Fine, if you insist. C'mon, before we freeze to death. We'd be gorgeous corpses, mind you, but it would rather ruin the holidays."

Remus just laughs and trudges ahead, and Sirius pauses to look back at the two sets of side-by-side footprints in the snowy grass. He catches up to Remus and slips his hand out to link their pinkies together. Sirius pretends he doesn’t notice the look Remus gives him, but he smiles when Remus twines their hands completely.

They huddle together in Remus' bed once more, and it somehow seems a bit smaller than before. Sirius brushes snow from Remus' hair, and Remus kisses him.

"G'night, Padfoot," he says. Sirius wonders if the pink patches on Remus' cheeks have more to do with the cold or the fact that everything they thought they knew has changed in one night. In a brief moment of clarity, he panics at the thought of what James and Peter and the world will think of two blokes who like each other. And then Remus smiles — a shy, beautiful smile — and nothing else matters.

"Goodnight, Moony."

They fall asleep with their heads just touching on the pillow. Outside in the garden the snow falls harder through the night, covering their tracks and keeping their secret safe.

I had a treehouse--how come nothing as exciting as this happened to me? Sigh.

Absolutely adorable! Love the awkwardness and back and forth between them. Love--LOVE--sarcastic Remus! ("No, it's just that my mum forgot to put marshmallows in my cocoa. Of course it was the fucking kiss.") Cute!

"defiled cherished childhood sanctuaries" and "gorgeous corpses" are the two lines that just get me, haha. Love that Remus even has a tree house to begin with too. Ah, the memories...

I'm a real sucker for Remus' childhood bedroom and toys, but this was especially nice. And experienced Remus and virginal Sirius is always good for extra yumminess, too!

This was a delightful blend of sweet and funny and was, altogether a joy to read. I loved this bit: Silence falls and Sirius begins to wonder if he'd hurt himself too much trying to Apparate. No, he doesn't have the faintest idea how it's done, but anything has got to be better than this. Sirius gets itchy when things go unsaid for too long, and the past eight months of not telling Remus that he'd like to snog his breath away, please and thank you, simply refuse to let another eight seconds go by.

Hurray for inner monologues.

for some odd reason, the Sirius who lives in my head has a fascination for Remus' childhood room as well

Mine, too. Maybe that is because, despite being a werewolf, Remus seemed to have a pretty normal childhood and Sirius certainly did not.
