The image of everything overgrown came from The Secret Garden and from this book called The World Without Us by Alan Weisman. It's about a vision of what would happen to the world after the potential collapse of humanity, but he describes this amazing ghost town in Cyprus called Varosha. It was once a rather high-class beach resort town, but was abandoned in 1974 to the Turks and it's been empty ever since. Trees and vines are growing through these once-posh hotels and the streets are taken over by plant life. It was really amazing and made me think about what would happen in a magical world.
And I am glad that you liked the whole mother-son connection thing. To me, no one is truly evil, but are made so through suffering and clinging to anger and bitterness. Walburga was certainly that way, I imagine. Obviously, it does not condone what she did to poor Sirius, but it might be healing for him to understand her more.
