Oh, god, thank you for the Virginia Woolf story reference--I went and read the story and it's so lovely. I'm glad you liked the fic! Actually, speaking of other texts, there's a Michael Chabon essay on M.R. James that says, "perhaps all short stories can be understood as ghost stories, accounts of visitations and reckonings with the traces of the past"--and I guess that's what I was going for here.
