As Sirius wandered through Hogsmeade – alone, for a change – he gave the various gaggles of girls baleful looks. They invariably looked cheerful, all wrapped up in their scarves and hats.

It wasn’t fair. It was so easy for girls. They had their magazines and whatnot to consult whenever they had – Sirius made air quotes in his head – Relationship Difficulties. And it wasn’t even like it was a Difficulty. He and Remus didn’t have any difficulties. Well, except for the incident that they didn’t talk about with the aubergine, but that was completely not his fault, and the boils had gone down after a couple of weeks. But this was different: he was utterly stumped as to what present he could buy for Remus.

It wouldn’t have mattered so much if it wasn’t for the fact that this was the first Christmas they’d spent together since, well, being together. He felt a bit squeamish about calling it a Relationship, or whatever else there was to call it. Remus, on the other hand, was a lot more comfortable with putting his arm casually around Sirius’ shoulders.

A couple of weeks ago, he’d sneaked a peek at a couple of Lily’s magazines that she’d unwisely left in the common room for inspiration. It had a quiz in it called ‘Which Aspect Of Christmas Are You?’ and in a fatalistic sort of way Sirius settled down to read it. Sirius wasn’t quite sure how to answer questions like ‘Your lad treats you to a meal. Delish! Where do you go?’ since Remus didn’t have the spare money to take him for a meal. And anyway, why would you want to go somewhere just so you could watch your ‘lad’ slurp wine and watch them get sauce all over their chin?

In the end, he got ‘You are a candy cane! Sweet, but just a little bit crunchy. Careful you don’t make your lad bite off more than he can chew!’ He threw the magazine on the floor in disgust. Inspiration for presents was thin on the ground.

It was even worse in Hogsmeade. There were Charmed lights flashing all over the place and when he wandered into the bookshop the proprietress was wearing a distinctly unnerving hat with attached reindeer antlers … at least, he hoped it was a hat. He gave her a small smile.
He struck gold when he reached the bookshop. Surely there would be something here. He browsed all the way from Doxies of Denmark and Environs by Harald Abfrith to A Guide to The Uses of Verbena Bonariensis by Electra Akroyd before losing interest. If he got bored by all this, surely Remus would be, too.

"Looking for anything in particular, dear?" asked the witch.

"I’m just feeling a bit uninspired," said Sirius, eyeing the huge Herbology section. Remus didn’t even like Herbology much. "My, er, my girlfriend is a bit hard to buy for."

The witch nodded, her horns jiggling a little. "Clever girl, is she?"

"Yes," said Sirius, unable to stop himself from smiling. "She likes Transfiguration especially."

"Hmm." The witch turned and rummaged amongst the bookshelves behind her, stopping to have a coughing fit as a cloud of dust flew up. Sirius shifted from foot to foot. "How about this?"

It appeared to be a book about werewolves and other shapechangers of the wizarding world. Sirius shook his head.

They got through five other suggestions before the witch gave a sigh and said, "Maybe she won’t want a book."

"But whenever we go to a shop, she gets a glazed look in her eyes and wanders towards the fiction section."

The witch put her hands on her hips and tutted. "Well, maybe she wants a bit of romance in her life, hmm? Don’t you think that might be the way forward?"

"Ro–" Sirius stared at her for a couple of seconds.

She rolled her eyes. "Some people," she said. "It’s a book a year and the next thing you know you’re forty and you’ve been married for twenty years."

Sirius nodded in what he hoped was a sympathetic fashion. She flapped her hand at him and he backed out of the shop.

Well, that had got him a whole lot of nothing. He wandered into the sweetshop to drown his sorrows and was immediately confronted with a four-foot-high chocolate heart displayed in a red satin box. Sirius approached it warily.

"PERFECT FOR YOUR LOVED ONE THIS CHRISTMAS!" shrieked a shrill voice from somewhere within the heart. Sirius jumped and hurried over to the other side of the shop.

On one of the lower shelves, something caught his eye. It was a small candied apple, sparkling with scarlet sugar. There was a little tag attached to the stalk. It was perfect and delicious and he had to get it for Remus right now. Sirius grinned as he thought of Remus’ reaction when he opened it. Fantastic.

It only occurred to Sirius once he was out in the street again that he would have to write a message to Remus on the tag. He sat on a bench and dug in his rucksack for a quill.

Dear Remus, he wrote. Well, that was reasonable enough.

Happy Christmas.

He debated for a minute or so about the correct way to sign it. If only he’d written the rest of it with large enough writing to make it unnecessary.

Pull yourself together, Sirius told himself. El Oh Vee Eee. It’s not so hard to write.

Quickly, so he wouldn’t regret it, he added, Love, Sirius. It was surprisingly relieving to do so. He wrapped the apple back in its gold tissue paper and put it carefully in his bag. Now all he had to do was buy for James and Peter. Heaven knew that their presents would be a breeze compared to this ordeal.

Oh dear! This just has to be the perfect description of guy-shopping: a sweet blend of confusion and good intentions. And the bit about wishing he'd written larger? Brilliant detail!

I LOVE it! Sirius is such a guy, isn't he? But I like that he tries to find Remus the perfect gift--awww. Oh, and thank you for not letting him buy Remus a book (yay!). I'm especially fond of Sirius reading Lily's magazine, and the gift tag at the end. Oh, and this: why would you want to go somewhere just so you could watch your ‘lad’ slurp wine and watch them get sauce all over their chin? My thoughts exactly!

This was so funny and charming, and just what I wanted. Thanks so much.

I love the bookshop lady! Although I would die of happiness if I got a book a year for twenty years. But I did adore this description of men Christmas shopping. And the magazine! Glorious!

I really, really want to know what Sirius told Lily's magazine that made it think he was 'sweet but a little bit crunchy.' Yikes! The sweet shop with the screaming heart was hilarious: poor Sirius, and to think, he'll go through this again in March....

Nor will Lily when she finds the magazine with a circled answer. Endless amusement from that.
