Countdown to Small Gifts 4/7: Beginnings

How did you first discover R/S? Do you remember the first story you read? The first art you saw? What attracted you to the pairing?

For those of you just discovering our posts, we're counting down to small gifts with a series of daily discussions of the ship:
Monday, November 23: Favorite eras and genres
Tuesday, November 24: Cliches
Wednesday, November 25: Sex

I used to be one of those people who refuse to read HP on principle :) I did notice the potential of this pairing years before, though, while watching PoA and thinking, 'Are you for real?' Even though I don't picture the characters they way the were in the movie, it definitely made an imprint.

So one day my friend announced she was leaving Seattle and moving back to Minnesota. She was a huge HP fan and tried to make me read it several times, so I decided to pick up the books as a goodbye present. I was massively, horribly prejudiced against them :) The first two did not go too well, but then I go to PoA. I fell asleep thinking about the characters one night and still thought about them when I woke up, so that made me an official HP fan. I was terrified of fanfiction, knowing how much bad writing you get (lots of experience with ff.net, hehe!) and how huge HP fandom is, but then GoF was long and did not touch the subject of Marauders until the very end, and I missed them.

The first fic was from the Russian fandom, but it was pretty bad, had some Snupin in it, and oh god the translated names, places and that damn password for the Map which made me want to scratch out my eyes. Besides, the fandom was relatively small, R/S was hugely unpopular and Snape seemed to creep in everywhere (he's cool, but I mean everywhere), so I got dissappointed and came to hang out here.

The Russian fandom is a scary, scary place. I never even tried to read something in Russian because I knew it'd be altogether badly written and have Snape in it. That fandom is all about Snape for some reason.

Так приятно видеть здесь русских :)

As to the original post question - it was [livejournal.com profile] shoebox_project for me. I didn't plan to fall in love with R/S, I thought I'd just read it and it'd be the end, but here I am, a year later, not only still not leaving but coming out of lurking. I don't even know why I love them so much - I just do.

Dude, you noticed the Snape thing too! What is the deal with the whole country being in love with him?

I have no idea. My only theory is that maybe there'd been some super-genius fic about Snape that heavily influenced the fandom? There was no such fic about the Marauders on the other hand, so they don't get any loving at all. IDK.
